Although total e-commerce revenue in the U.S. apparel and accessories segment is expected to reach $39.6 billion by the end of the year, statistical data aggregating firm statista.com expects sales to soar 27 percent to $50.4 billion by 2018.
Driven by a compounded annual growth rate of about 7.7 percent, the firm has the segment pegged to reach $57.5 billion in e-commerce sales by 2020.
The firm said in its most recent analysis of the market that user penetration — the percent of consumers who buy apparel and accessories online — is 40.2 percent, and Statista expects it to climb to 52.4 percent in 2020.
Average revenue per user is $381, and the company sees that rising to $398 in 2018 and $406 by 2020. This compares to an ARPU for the food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals segment of $1,757, which will rise to $2,018 in 2018 and $2,227 in 2020. This segment has a user penetration of 63 percent, which will rise to 68 percent in 2018 and 70.2 percent in 2020.
