LONDON — European markets made modest gains in morning trading on Tuesday, with the exception of London’s FTSE 100, which fell 0.2 percent to 6,867.57.

The CAC 40 in Paris and Frankfurt’s DAX both advanced 1 percent, to 4,545.04 and to 10,680.13 respectively. Milan’s FTSE MIB rose 0.5 percent to 17,199.48.

The euro traded at $1.11, while the pound fetched $1.33 and the Swiss franc equaled $1.02 at 10:00 a.m. CET.

Fashion, luxury and retail stocks were choppy. Among stocks making gains were, 2.3 percent to 0.87 pounds; Joules, 1.6 percent to 1.91 pounds; and Yoox-Net-a-porter, 1.5 percent to 28.50 euros.

Stocks losing ground included French Connection, 2 percent to 0.47 pounds; Gemfields, 1.9 percent to 0.38 pounds; and Jimmy Choo, 1.3 percent to 1.24 pounds.
