The company that saw the biggest gain was Pandora A/S, up 3.8 percent to 429.50 Danish krones, or $77.90, followed by Matsuya Co., up 3.5 percent to 1,064.00 yen, or $10.50. Three U.S.-based firms rounded up the top five gainers for the day: Elizabeth Arden Inc., up 2.3 percent to $21.30; Inter Parfums Inc. gaining 2.2 percent to $27.37, and Under Armour Inc., rising 2.2 percent to $60.26.
Of the top five stocks to lose the most in the day’s trading sessions, three were from the U.S.-equity market and two trade on overseas exchanges. American Apparel Inc. slid 6 percent to close at $1.09, while Li Ning Co. fell 4.5 percent to 4.51 in Hong Kong dollars, or 58 cents at current exchange. The Swatch Group Ltd. was down 2.9 percent to 498.60 in Swiss francs, or $554.71. Rounding out the top five were Quiksilver Inc., down 2.1 percent to $3.28 and Abercrombie & Fitch Co., sliding 1.9 percent to $38.51.
In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.4 percent to 17,113.54.
In Europe, the FTSE MIB in Milan led the way, gaining 2.2 percent to 20,873.50. Next was the CAC 40 in Paris, which rose 1.5 percent to 4,369.52, followed by the DAX in Frankfurt, gaining 1.3 percent to 9,734.33. The FTSE 100 in London increased 1 percent to 6,795.34.
