LONDON — European stock markets were down in midmorning trading on Monday, with the exception of the FTSE 100 in London, which edged up 0.2 percent to 7,227.61.
The CAC 40 in Paris and the DAX in Frankfurt both fell 0.5 percent to 4,883.13 and to 11,545.41, respectively; followed by the FTSE MIB in Milan, 0.4 percent to 19,612.52.
The euro traded at $1.05, while the pound fetched $1.23 and the Swiss franc equaled $0.98 at 11:00 a.m. CET.
Retail and luxury stocks were mostly up, with the morning’s biggest gainers including Joules Group, 3.3 percent to 2.20 pounds; Koovs.com, 7.1 percent to 0.53 pounds, and the Swatch Group, 1.5 percent to 62.10 Swiss francs.
Among the few stocks that lost ground was Gemfields, which was down 2 percent to 0.49 pounds.
