Geenee, the screen-shopping app that turns Instagram into a shoppable marketplace, has secured a $4.4 million Series A funding round.

The investors in the round include Highlight Communications AG, Constantin Media AG, Stephen Cohen and Steve Titus.

The Geenee app uses image recognition technology to allow a user to capture via a screenshot a look or ensemble of one’s favorite Instagram influencer, which then uses a proprietary algorithm to find the item. If an exact match can’t be made, the app recommends similar options for purchase.

Geenee was founded by Thorsten Magers. According to Magers, “With our software, we’ve reimagined the way people will shop by allowing them to instantly purchase any outfit they see from our Instagram influencers.”

Geenee said it will use the funding from the Series A round to grow its team, adding new staff members to assist with app development.

Cofounder Andrew Rogal said the company plans to continue to develop its marketplace platform where influencers and shoppers can interact.

The company made its app available to users today.
