LINGERIE MOVES: Two serious candidates are reportedly interested in purchasing Sara Lee Corp.’s troubled apparel business in Europe. According to reports in France, PAI Partners, a Paris-based investment fund, and Oaktree Capital Management LLC, of Los Angeles, are both interested in the firm that operates the Dim, Playtex, Unno, Wonderbra, Berlei and Gossard lingerie brands in Europe. Sara Lee Corp. also produces in-house lingerie collections in the U.K. for retailers, including Marks & Spencer. Since last spring, Sara Lee has been reviewing strategic options for its European apparel business, which had sales of $1.6 billion last year. A Dim spokeswoman would not comment on the reports, while executives at neither PAI Partners nor Oaktree Capital could be reached for comment. Meanwhile, George Chappelle has been named to the new position of chief information officer at Chicago-based Sara Lee Corp. He will be responsible for the company’s global information technology operations. He will report to L.M. (Theo) de Kool, executive vice president and chief financial and administrative officer. Chappelle was most recently vice president and cio of H.J. Heinz Co. De Kool said Chappelle and his team will be responsible for implementing a “common technology platform” for collecting and managing information across Sara Lee.
