NEW YORK — A federal judge has awarded $5.4 million in damages to Indigo Knitwear International in a lawsuit over its patented indigo-dyed knitted apparel that fades like denim.

IKI filed suit last February in Alexandria, Va., claiming losses of $1.8 million as a result of infringement on its patent by Filartex SpA of Breschia, Italy.

The court ruled in IKI’s favor last week and ordered Filartex to pay IKI, based in Wimbledon, England, three times the claimed losses. Filartex is also prohibited from any further violations of Indigo’s patent, according to the ruling.

Attorneys for Filartex could not be reached for comment.
