TOKYO — Japanese retailers’ sales increased in August, as sweltering temperatures drew customers inside air-conditioned stores in search of cool, lightweight clothing and other products.
Fast Retailing said Tuesday that Uniqlo’s August same-store sales increased 28.9 percent, with customer numbers rising 33.4 percent.
“Same-store sales generated another strong performance in August, with the hot weather continuing throughout the month, and our advertised product ranges and other summer items selling well,” the company said.
Isetan Mitsukoshi, Japan’s largest department store operator, said that sales at its nine main domestic stores were up 8.9 percent in August, compared to the same month last year. Sales at the Isetan Shinjuku store and the Ginza Mitsukoshi store, both of which have undergone renovations in recent years, rose over 17 percent.
Takashimaya saw sales at its 18 stores in Japan increase 0.3 percent on the year, with its stores in Tokyo seeing growth of up to 4.4 percent. The company said that men’s clothing and accessories, interior goods and big-ticket items performed particularly well.
H2O Retailing, which operates the Hankyu and Hanshin retail chains, said its department store sales in Japan rose 19.1 percent in August, much of which had to do with a 76.5 percent sales jump at its Hankyu Umeda flagship, which was renovated and expanded last year. August marks the 10th month in a row of sales increases for Hankyu Hanshin.
J. Front Retailing saw sales at its Daimaru and Matsuzakaya department stores grow by 6.2 percent year-on-year in August. The retailer said that luxury brands, fine art, jewelry, furniture and rugs performed particularly well, as did summer items such as t-shirts and parasols.
