NEW YORK — Milliken & Co. said it is closing its Barnwell, S.C., weaving plant, one of the company’s 56 facilities in the United States.
Milliken said a phaseout of the operation will begin July 25, with closing scheduled by the end of September. The firm said 150 employees will lose their jobs. Overall, Milliken employs more than 7,000.
Company officials blamed the plant closing on the rise in imports from China and elsewhere in the Far East.
The company’s Barnwell dyeing and finishing plant, located near the weaving operation, will be unaffected by the closing, said a company spokesman.
The spokesman added that Milliken will either transfer employees to other company facilities or will try to find them jobs with other firms in the Barnwell area.
