WASHINGTON — The Retail Industry Leaders Association said Tuesday it has formed a new partnership with the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance to enhance information sharing on cyber attacks and security, as retailers take another step to combat data security breaches.

RILA’s partnership with NCFTA, a nonprofit corporation that leverages expertise across several resources including law enforcement, academia and industry, to fight cyber crimes, comes on the heels of a broader collaboration between merchants and the financial industry unveiled last week.

Highly publicized data security breaches at Target Corp. and Neiman Marcus Group affecting millions of consumers have intensified public and Congressional scrutiny of retailers, banks and credit card companies, and put pressure on them to strengthen payment systems and modernize credit and debit cards to thwart hackers. RILA’s new partnership will focus on improving the network of threat-sharing information in an effort to explore technologies to strengthen the security of payment systems and protect consumers’ personal data and credit card information.


“Our partnership with NCFTA is one of many information-sharing models we are pursuing as part of our multisolution approach to cybersecurity,” said Lisa LaBruno, senior vice president of retail operations at RILA. “Collaboration among retailers and other stakeholders is essential to detecting threats early on and combatting cyber criminals.”

RILA said the partnership with NCFTA will provide a “trusted forum” for retailers to collaborate with a wide range of cybersecurity players to develop new solutions to the evolving cyber attacks plaguing retailers and other industries. RILA’s Retail Cybersecurity Leaders Council plans to launch the new information-sharing process with NCFTA in March at an event in Pittsburgh.
