DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — Spiegel Inc. reported earnings more than doubled in the first quarter. In the quarter ended March 31, the company earned $6.5 million, or 6 cents a share, against $2.9 million, or 3 cents, a year ago.
Revenues, including finance and other income, rose 24 percent, to $622.1 million from $500.3 million. Total sales were up 25 percent, to $548.7 million, and women’s apparel showed gains.
John J. Shea, vice chairman, president and chief executive officer, said the sales gain reflects strong growth in all divisions, with a 12 percent gain in Eddie Bauer comparable-store sales. He cited strengthening in women’s apparel, particularly in the casual apparel category. Spiegel’s gross profit margin on net sales improved to 32.8 percent from 30.3 percent.
