Target Corp. has promoted Tony Fisher to the new post of president of its Target Canada unit.

 

Fisher, with Target since 1999 and vice president of merchandise operations since his promotion last year, will be responsible for “building the team, establishing the headquarters and leading the day-to-day operations” of the company’s expansion into Canada, details of which were disclosed last week.

 

Target has paid about $1.84 billion for the right to take over up to 220 leases currently held by Zellers Inc., a unit of Hudson’s Bay Trading Co., and plans to open 100 to 150 Target stores across Canada in 2013 and 2014.

 

“Tony has a strong sense of Target’s unique culture, merchandising strategy and brand and a proven record of delivering results,” said Michael Francis, chief marketing officer of Target Corp. and executive committee sponsor of Target Canada.  “His positive energy, broad merchandise experience and keen understanding of what differentiates Target in the retail industry make Tony well-suited for this new role and position Target for success in Canada.”

 

Based in Minneapolis, Target currently operates 1,752 stores in 49 states and target.com.
