TOKYO – Fast Retailing said Thursday that Uniqlo’s same-store sales in September spiked 20.8 percent, a rare bright spot in an otherwise dismal Japanese retail climate.
Total sales for the month grew 27 percent on the year, thanks to “aggressive promotion” and strong sales of fall and winter items. Cooler temperatures in the second part of the month boosted the sale of warmer garments, the company said.  
Slim-fitting pants and merino sweaters were among the top sellers of the month, according to the company.   The numbers exclude Uniqlo’s stores outside Japan, but include sales from the chain’s 736 directly managed stores. The company closed eight stores and opened four new ones during the month.   The number of consumers in September increased 15.2 percent and the spending per consumer rose 10.3 percent.
