Traffic in the garment center remained snarled Wednesday afternoon due to an ongoing investigation stemming from the West 37th Street police shooting of a man who was wanted for attacking at least three people with a hammer in Manhattan earlier this week.
Shortly after 10 a.m., a man in his 30s started swinging a hammer in the direction of an unnamed female NYPD officer at the corner of West 37th Street and Eighth Avenue, after she and her partner approached the assailant, according to a NYPD spokeswoman. The officer’s male partner then shot the hammer-wielding man. Both police officers, whose names had not yet been released, were taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, as was the assailant.
Streets near the incident were closed off to vehicular traffic as the investigation continues, the NYPD spokeswoman said.
Messengers and pedestrians can still access the streets that have been closed to vehicles in the affected area, according to a spokeswoman at Naeem Khan, which is located at 260 West 36th Street.
