SHANGHAI — An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit Tokyo on Tuesday.
The epicenter of the quake was northeast of the capital, in Ibaraki Prefecture, at a depth of about 50 kilometers.
Buildings in downtown Tokyo shook with the force of the earthquake, though reported damage was minimal. Local emergency services crews responded to calls from several local residents with minor injuries.
A statement from Japan’s Meteorological Agency said there was no risk of a tsunami, though it warned the public to be on the alert for aftershocks. Nuclear agencies in the region did not report any new damage or irregularities to reactors.
Services were temporarily suspended on several bullet train lines, but have since resumed.
