Call it the art of beauty: Dior Beauty has signed Bil Donovan as the brand’s first artist-in-residence.
In this role, Donovan will serve as an illustrator at selected events, consult on product launches and act as an ambassador for the brand.
He is the brand’s third brand ambassador: Tinsley Mortimer and Harley Viera-Newton also hold the title.
Donovan, a native of Philadelphia, began studying drawing and illustration at the Arts Student League at 19. He holds an A.A.S. degree in fashion illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology and a bachelor of fine arts from the School of Visual Arts. His résumé includes credits in Vogue and Italian Elle and a stint as a shoe designer in Paris, and he has taught at FIT for the past 15 years.
Donovan said he was inspired by the work of famed Hollywood costume designer Edith Head in choosing a career. “These films were like Christmas presents,” said Donovan. “As a kid, after seeing all this glamour on screen, all I wanted to do was run home and draw what I had seen.” His fashion illustrations are featured in the book “The Dress Doctor: A Prescription for Style from A to Z,” which showcases Head’s designs.
