Industry veteran Frank Tworecke is planning to retire at the end of the year.

Tworecke, who has held management positions at several retail and apparel companies over the course of his career, is currently president of the Sportswear Group at The Warnaco Group Inc., a position he has held since 2004.

Tworecke, who is 65, told WWD Monday: “I came here with a history over the past 15 years of going into companies that needed a turnaround. I was recruited at Warnaco for that same reason and joined right after it came out of bankruptcy. Today, the company is successful and prospering and we’ve restructured accordingly, so it’s time for me to move on.”

Tworecke said “the timing is perfect” with the ascension of Helen McCluskey to president and chief executive officer, and the addition of several new executives who will take on the responsibilities that he had previously overseen. These include Karyn Hillman as chief merchandising officer for Calvin Klein Jeans and Accessories, Mark Whyman as chief commercial officer for Warnaco’s Calvin Klein businesses globally, and Tom Speight, president and managing director of Calvin Klein Jeans and Calvin Klein Underwear North America.

“This is all part of the succession plan we laid out a few years ago,” Tworecke said.

Warnaco, the manufacturer of Calvin Klein underwear and jeans, recently spelled out a five-year plan that calls for increasing sales from $2.5 billion in 2011 to $4 billion by 2016 by growing the direct-to-consumer channel; ramping up international expansion; gaining market share with its heritage swim, sportswear and intimates brands, and managing cash to enhance shareholder value.

“I believe the opportunities for Warnaco are boundless,” said Tworecke, who has been an integral member of the management team that established the platform to grow and expand the Calvin Klein Jeans and Accessories businesses. “The new team and structure are well positioned to write the next successful chapter for Warnaco.”

Before Warnaco, Tworecke was with The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. from 1999 to 2004 as president and chief operating officer, and before that, he held the same position with Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc. He has also had senior merchandising positions with Federated Department Stores Inc. and Merry-Go-Round Enterprises Inc.

“It’s an opportune time for me to step away from the daily operations of the business and focus my attention on the next phase of my pursuits: continuing my involvement in charities and educational affiliations, along with evaluating opportunities where I can apply my expertise in providing guidance to management,” Tworecke said. “Other than work on my golf game, I hope to sit on a couple of boards.” He said he has no desire at this point to take on an operational role with any other company, but would like to “continue to interface with the industry in some way. I want to stay connected and do something where I can provide value.”
