Ending a more than 14-year association, Julian Geiger has stepped down as non-executive chairman and a director of Aéropostale Inc.

The company has appointed Karin Hirtler-Garvey, previously the lead independent director of the New York-based teen specialty retailer, to the post of non-executive chairman and named former Macy’s Inc. vice chairman Janet Grove to fill the vacancy on the board.

Geiger, who joined Crumbs Bake Shop Inc. as president and chief executive officer in November, headed Aéropostale from its spin off from Federated Department Stores, now Macy’s Inc., in 1998, through its initial public offering in 2002 and until his retirement in 2010. He has since served as chairman and director. He was president and ceo of Federated Specialty Stores, which included Aéropostale, for two years beginning in 1996.

Hirtler-Garvey has been a director of the company since 2005. She is a certified public accountant whose experience includes posts as chief risk executive for Ally Financial and several senior level management posts with Bank of America.

Grove retired from Macy’s in June and now serves as a director of Safeway Inc. Her 35 years of retail experience included posts as ceo of Macy’s Merchandising Group and division vice chairman for merchandising of private brands and product development.
