Marcia Gaynor will leave her post at Walgreens as the company relocates the Prestige Beauty merchandising team to its Deerfield, Ill., headquarters. Gaynor, a veteran beauty executive, was most recently the divisional merchandise manager for prestige, global and exclusive owned brands for Walgreens.
Prior to that she held various roles with Duane Reade, which Walgreens acquired in 2010, where she is credited with leading and pioneering the inception of the Look Boutique, the first prestige beauty department located inside a U.S. drugstore. Under her direction, Look Boutiques attracted brands not previously sold in drugstores such as Pür Cosmetics, Talika and Demeter fragrances.
“Marcia is the single most forward-thinking mass-merchant I have ever had the pleasure to work with,” said Mark. D. Crames, the chief executive officer of Demeter Fragrance Library, which anchored its entire collection at Look Boutique.
“I am thankful for the companies who really took a leap of faith to support us and share our vision that has now grown into 53 Look Boutiques across the U.S.,” said Gaynor.
Her efforts behind prestige at Walgreens include elevating training and instituting in-store beauty services once unheard of in drug chains. Since the merger of Walgreens and Alliance Boots, Gaynor helped integrate Boots No7 into Duane Reade New York stores and flagship Walgreens locations.
“No one has more passion and drive for the industry than Marcia,” said Joe Magnacca, the current ceo of Massage Envy and the former president of Duane Reade. “Her achievements have not only contributed to the Duane Reade and Walgreens’ beauty development, but to the industry as a whole. I was honored to work with such an inspiring advocate for the industry.”
Walgreens said, “As part of our ongoing efforts to become America’s most-loved beauty destination, we recently decided to move the Prestige Beauty roles from New York City to our global headquarters in Deerfield, Ill. Having the Prestige Beauty team colocated with the rest of the beauty merchandising and planning teams will allow for improved collaboration and alignment as we all work together toward our multi-year plan. Decisions that may affect team members are never made lightly.”
The company added, “We want to express our sincere appreciation to Marcia for her hard work and dedication. The change is effective August 31. Walgreens is committed to building a prestige omnichannel business in the U.S. and we feel that having the Prestige Beauty team colocated will support this strategy.”
Prior to Duane Reade, Gaynor consulted for Cosmetics Plus in New Jersey and was a senior buyer with Pharmhouse, a powerhouse deep discounter with upscale beauty. She created the first premium bath boutique in a drugstore which was then emulated by other mass marketers.
