MCM, the Munich-based handbag and accessories maker, has appointed Adrian Margelist chief creative officer, a newly created position at the company.

The job marks Margelist’s second tour of duty at the brand where he served as global artistic director from 2008 to 2010. In that role, the Swiss designer helped develop a strategy for expansion in Asia. MCM said it hopes he will continue to make inroads in the region.

“I had a fantastic journey in 2008 and am enthused for this stage in reaching and achieving greater frontiers,” said Margelist. “Given the brand’s growing notoriety in Asia, there is an enormous potential in reaching today’s fans and tomorrow’s loyalists. The consumers are growing and it’s important that we grow with them.”

Prior to MCM, Margelist worked at Vivienne Westwood, Chanel and Givenchy. More recently, from 2006 to 2008, he served as Esprit’s global head of accessories design where he worked closely with the brand’s Hong Kong-based management.

Margelist’s new job at MCM “marks one of several key tactics the brand has implemented as a component of its strategic growth and development for 2013,” according to company chief visionary officer Sung-Joo Kim.

“Margelist’s wealth of knowledge, insight and experience within the fashion industry will add significant value and expertise to the team,” Kim added.
