DALLAS — Alden Clanahan, the vice president of trend direction and design at the Dallas Market Center, died Feb. 5 in his apartment of unknown causes, according to the DMC. He was 52.

“We are saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague Alden Clanahan,” said Bill Winsor, president and chief executive officer of the Dallas Market Center. “Alden’s creative vision is imprinted throughout our campus. He elevated the Market Center’s aesthetic and established it as a destination for inspiration. Alden will be deeply missed.”

When Clanahan didn’t show up for work and attempts to reach him were unsuccessful, the DMC alerted authorities, who found his body reclined on a couch, his dog by his side. Autopsy results are pending.

Clanahan, 52, was known for his kind, gentle personality and support for local charities. He served on the board of Fashion Group International’s Dallas chapter since January 2011, styling the look of its Night of Stars fund-raiser and other events.

Clanahan received the Texas Legend award from Metroplex Cadillac Dealers in 2005 for his support of Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA), where he helped raise funds as a board member from 1998 to 2009.

Born in Tyler, Tex., Clanahan earned a degree in advertising and started his career in 1981 at Sanger Harris, which later merged with Foley’s. He also worked as production manager for Dallas designer Sandra Garratt.

In 1994, Clanahan started his own business as a freelance visual merchandiser and store designer for clients such as Escada, Tootsies and the DMC. He joined Neiman Marcus in 1998 as assistant visual merchandising manager, moving to the DMC in January, 2001.

Clanahan is survived by his mother, Wanda Clanahan, sister, Erickie Clanahan Pearce, and brother, Dwayne Clanahan. Services have not been set. The family requested that memorial donations be made to DIFFA and the SPCA.
