Rhodri Harries has been appointed executive vice president and chief financial and administrative officer of Gildan Activewear Inc., the Montreal-based supplier of knitwear and other family apparel.

Harries, chief financial officer of Rio Tinto Alcan Inc. since 2014, previously served as the firm’s chief commercial officer for four years and as vice president and corporate treasurer of Alcan for five years. He remained with the company following its acquisition by Rio Tinto in 2007.

Earlier in his career, Harries served in a series of financial and business development posts for General Motors in North America, Asia and Europe.

Harries’ start date at Gildan hasn’t been set as Rio Tinto Alcan makes plans for the transition in his duties.

At Gildan, he succeeds Laurence Sellyn, who will continue with the company as required pending Harries’ arrival.

“With his strong experience in finance, commercial and operations leadership roles in major global corporations, Rhodri will be an important addition to our executive team as we continue to implement the next stage of our growth strategies,” said Glenn Chamandy, president and chief executive officer of Gildan.

Harries will be the third person to fill the finance and administration post at Gildan this year. Sellyn resumed his oversight of those areas following the resignation of James Kehoe, who returned to Kraft Foods as executive vice president and cfo in February.
