Ronald Boire is stepping down as president and chief executive officer of the company "at the end of the summer to pursue an opportunity in the United States," the retailer said in a statement.

Sears Canada Inc. said Ronald Boire is stepping down as president and chief executive officer of the company “at the end of the summer to pursue an opportunity in the United States.”

In a separate statement, Barnes & Noble Inc. named Boire ceo of the company’s retail business, effective Sept. 8.

Boire was named Sears Canada’s interim ceo in fall 2014, and then ceo in January. Brandon Stranzl, chairman, was named executive chairman – taking effect immediately, the retailer said.

“I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to play an expanded role within our organization, and I am committed to working closely with all our Sears associates and business partners to make progress on our goals to delight our customers and return Sears Canada to profitability,” Stranzl said.

The retailer is now searching for a new ceo.
