RUBEL GETS VARSITY CEO: Matthew E. Rubel has been named chief executive officer of Varsity Brands, a portfolio of brands that promotes and elevates student experience and participation and celebrates student achievement.

He takes over the ceo role from founder Jeff Webb, who will remain active in the business as chairman of the board.
Rubel most recently served as a senior adviser to such private equity firms as Roark Capital and TPG Capital. Earlier he served as chairman and ceo of Collective Brands, the global parent of Payless Shoes, Saucony, Sperry Topsider, Keds and Stride Rite, and was chairman and ceo of Cole Haan.
In 2014, Varsity Brands was acquired by Charlesbank Capital Partners. Varsity Brands’ products and programs include yearbooks, graduation products, cheerleading camps and competitions and sports apparel and equipment. Its businesses are Herff Jones; BSN Sports, and Varsity Spirit. The company reaches its individual and institutional customers through catalogue, e-commerce sites and direct sales channels.
