William McLaughlin, former chief executive officer of Select Comfort Corp., has been named president of The Orvis Co. Inc., the Sunderland, Vt.-based retailer of outdoor apparel and fishing, hunting and hiking gear.

The appointment takes effect July 27. Raymond McCready, who’s been with the company since 2001 and has served as president since 2007, will retire from the company later this year.

A veteran of PepsiCo and Pillsbury, McLaughlin served as president and ceo of Select Comfort for 12 years beginning in 2000 and was responsible for the development of the Sleep Number brand, sales of which are concentrated in Select Comfort’s more than 400 retail stores.

Orvis, originally a mail order operator, has expanded its brick-and-mortar retail base to more than 70 stores in the U.S. and 20 in the U.K.

“Bill is a proven leader with a passion for brand-building and customer-centric retail experiences,” said Perk Perkins, ceo of Orvis, who noted that McLaughlin’s “leadership style, personal connection to the outdoors and commitment to innovation and customer service all beautifully align to our company’s purpose, personality and guiding beliefs.”
