Vuori Clothing has hired design veteran Sarah Carlson to oversee its newly launched women’s collection.
Her title will be vice president of women’s product design, a position that was created for her and puts her in charge of the company’s women’s category. Carlton was most recently vice president of design and product innovation at Athleta, where she led a team of some 30 designers. She is credited with launching items that included the Empower Bra, Sculptek, Powervita and NeoShell and was also the founder of Athleta Academy, a training program for designers, that launched in 2017.
She has also held design positions at Gap, Banana Republic, Tommy Hilfiger, New York & Co., Liz Claiborne, Levi Strauss and Harve Benard. In July 2018, she founded Sarah Carlson Inc., which was dedicated to creating sustainable products.
“I have always been passionate about designing apparel that supports women to lead active, healthy and vibrant lifestyles,” Carlson said of her career. “With its refreshed perspective on performance apparel, Vuori undoubtedly shares those passions with me as they continually break the boundaries of traditional activewear.”
Encinitas, Calif.-based Vuori launched as a men’s activewear brand in 2015 and this spring will introduce its first full women’s collection.
Joe Kudla, founder and chief executive officer, pointed to Carlson’s “decorated background and track record of success” as key to the hire. “Perhaps most importantly, Sarah’s passion for innovation, sustainability and the creative process are well aligned with the values that we cherish and have built this business around.”
Vuori opened its first two brick-and-mortar stores in Manhattan Beach and San Francisco, Calif., last year and is planning to add a third unit in Del Mar, Calif., later this year.
