CLEANING HOUSE: Good Housekeeping named Jane Francisco editor in chief Monday, following the departure of longtime editor Rosemary Ellis, who is leaving the publication to “pursue new opportunities.”

Francisco, who was editor in chief of Canadian lifestyle media brand Chatelaine since 2009, will take the reins at the Hearst Corp.-owned magazine on Dec. 2, where she will report to Hearst Magazines president David Carey.

Prior to Chatelaine, Francisco was editor in chief of Style at Home. She was also founding editor in chief of St. Joseph’s Media’s Wish magazine from 2004 to 2008, and was tapped as editorial director of the company’s lifestyle group in 2006, where she oversaw the titles Gardening Life and Canadian Family. In 2001, Francisco was named launch editor in chief of the beauty and health-focused Glow, where she served until 2004. Earlier in her career, Francisco was marketing director at Fashion magazine and worked with Futurebrand creating the image and strategy for new brands in the U.S. and Canada. She also cocreated arts and culture magazine Venue.

Ellis was named editor in chief of Good Housekeeping in 2006. Aside from directing editorial coverage, Ellis championed 7 Years Younger, a Hearst property that she helped launch in 2011 that’s best known for its series of self-help books on weight loss, fitness, beauty and antiaging.

Hearst did not comment when asked to provide further detail on Ellis’ departure and future plans. Circulation, which in 2010 totaled more than 4.4 million, fell to just under that level in 2012, amounting to a 1.6 percent drop over the two-year period. In the first half of 2013, circulation rose 1.2 percent, boosted by digital-replica sales of 35,859 from the introduction of the magazine’s iPad app.
