LONDON — Karina Dobrotvorskaya has been tapped as president and editorial director, brand development, of Condé Nast International, the publisher said in a statement.
The position is a new one, and Dobrotvorskaya will report to Jonathan Newhouse, chairman and chief executive of the company. She will take up her role in January, and be based in Paris.
Dobrotvorskaya will be responsible for developing new print and digital products worldwide, and will focus on launching new products and brands in emerging markets, Condé Nast said.
She will also support brand development in global markets for the international division of the company, which operates more than 120 magazines and 80 Web sites in 26 markets outside the United States.
“The purpose of Karina’s appointment is to guarantee the highest level of editorial quality as Condé Nast expands its branded products into new markets and new media,” Newhouse said. “Karina is a superb editor who will use her talent, experience, and know-how to fight for editorial excellence.”
Dobrotvorskaya is currently president of Condé Nast Russia, having been appointed in 2008. Born in St. Petersburg in 1966, she began her magazine career in 1998 as the first features editor of Russian Vogue.
She later became the founding editor of Architectural Digest in Russia, and served as a consultant on the launch of Glamour in 2004. In 2006, she was named editorial director of the company while continuing to edit AD.
Under her direction, Condé Nast Russia launched Tatler, Brides, Condé Nast Traveller, and the first European edition of Allure. She also supervised the establishment of seven branded Web sites.
Dobrotvorskaya began her career as an academic. She has a PhD from the St. Petersburg National Academy of Theatre Arts, and worked as a professor before crossing over into magazine publishing. She is married to the journalist Alexey Tarkhanov, who is Paris correspondent for the Russian newspaper Kommersant.
