In a rare social media faux pas, Diane von Furstenberg’s team posted a Photoshopped image of Bruce Jenner wearing a wrap dress on Instagram late Tuesday in a bid to show solidarity with the former athlete regarding his sexual identity.
The post was immediately taken down after it caused a firestorm on social media.
Von Furstenberg declined to comment on why she posted the photo or if it was meant in jest, but instead provided the following statement: “I admire Bruce Jenner’s strength, courage and honesty and have so much respect for him using his voice to speak for people who have none. I wish him nothing but a lifetime of happiness.”
Jenner, who came out as transgender in an interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer on Friday, had indicated that he would soon transition and appear in public as a woman.
Von Furstenberg’s post depicted a black-and-white photo from the designer’s famous wrap dress campaign in 1974. Jenner’s head was Photoshopped on the designer’s body and accompanied by her company’s tagline: “Feel like a woman, wear a dress.”
Under the photo, the caption read: “Bruce Jenner…You are the woman you wanted to be! I salute your strength, courage and honesty. By speaking out, you have spoken for so many who suffer… Love Diane @kimkardashian @kendalljenner.”
The post was taken down immediately once von Furstenberg realized that it was causing a stir on social media and had been picked up by media outlets all over the Internet.
