GREAT SCOT: Who can forget how captivating Tilda Swinton was portraying an androgynous nobleman roaming through a castle in the 1992 film “Orlando”? Certainly not Karl Lagerfeld, who cast the Oscar-winning actress in Chanel’s advertising campaign for the Paris-Edinburgh collection, the luxury métiers d’art range of pre-fall ready-to-wear paraded last December at Linlithgow Palace. The ads are slated to break in June magazines.

Lagerfeld first photographed Swinton around the time of “Orlando,” and reunited with her for the shoot earlier this month in the Château d’Ecouen, a castle from the Renaissance period located near Chantilly, France. (He also shot Swinton for “The Little Black Jacket,” a book and exhibition slated to hit Milan’s Rotonda di Via Besana from April 6 to 20.)

While her Scottish nationality matches the collection’s inspiration, Swinton is also “a modern woman, a timeless icon of elegance,” Lagerfeld said.
