TIME SHIFTS: Nancy Gibbs, the newly crowned managing editor of Time magazine, has promoted Michael Duffy and Radhika Jones to deputy managing editors.

According to Gibbs, the duo is a “perfect complement to one another,” as Time continues to develop its digital strategy, a feat that happens to be at the top of her list. This month, Time.com will get a makeover, which Gibbs told WWD at the time of her own promotion in September will help it better compete against rival digital properties such as BuzzFeed and The Huffington Post.

“It’s true that part of Time.com includes just higher volume and velocity of news. But it’s exactly because there’s so much information out there that the cover of Time is more powerful,” she said at the time.

While Jones and Duffy have different backgrounds at Time, they have both played major roles in shepherding strong cultural and political coverage for the publication.

Jones joined Time in 2008 as arts editor and has expanded her coverage to include its Person of the Year and Time 100 sections, as well as various celebrity and cultural features. Duffy has been Time’s main political scribe in Washington, covering the White House and Congress. Duffy, who joined Time in 1985, has also served as D.C. bureau chief, national editor and executive editor.

The promotions are part of many internal shifts that are taking place at Time Inc.

Last week, Martha Nelson, the company’s editor in chief, departed, as Norman Pearlstine returned to the company in the new role of chief content officer.

A new editorial structure was installed in which managing editors would now report to the group presidents of Time’s magazine divisions. Gibbs, for example, now reports to Todd Larsen, executive vice president and group president of news and sports, which oversees publications such as Time, Fortune and Sports Illustrated.
