MARIE CLAIRE NABS FIRST LADY: Well not that first lady — and not that Marie Claire. Marie Claire Mexico is featuring the first lady of Mexico, Angélica Rivera de Peña, on its July cover. The issue marks the first time de Peña has ever appeared on a fashion magazine cover.

Although the first lady was not available for comment, Marie Claire Mexico editor in chief Ariadne Grant said the issue embodies “female empowerment and girl power.

“Our mission has always been to capture the spirit of our times in the pages of this magazine — those things which are relevant to us, what we are living,” said Grant.

Appearing on the cover with the first lady is her daughter, Sofía Castro, who, like her mother, is clad in a power suit. “They both represent women nowadays and as you will be able to read, have broken stereotypes and know that power is not the same as aloofness, but a tool for helping others; they are hard-working, shine on their own light and hold their own views in a fierce daily battle for what they dream to achieve,” Grant concluded.

The photos, which were taken by Gregory Allen, include arty black-and-white portraits of the duo from inside Los Pinos, the residence of the Mexican president.
