OUT OF VOGUE: Wendy Hirschberg, Vogue’s fractious fashion market director, whose tempestuous phone calls to showrooms became the stuff of legend, quit on Monday, as she said, “to focus on other things.” And though few at Vogue were said to be upset with her resignation — her relations with Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour were apparently diplomatic at best — few questioned Hirschberg’s effectiveness on the job. As one person who’d worked alongside her said: “She was a no-nonsense sort of person, but she definitely got the job done.”
Her successor hasn’t been named.
FASHIONAL LAMPOON: Think Imitation of Christ: the magazine, but actually funny, and you’ve got Cheap Date, the impish, independently published fashion glossy from Bay Garnett and Kira Jolliffe. Hitting stands next week, the magazine features a Paris and Nicky Hilton comic strip, an entire spread of celebrity cigarette butts, and a tongue-in-cheek take on fashion ad campaigns by photographer Craig McDean, in which ads for companies like Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent are redone as campaigns for the Salvation Army and Goodwill. The typeface is identical, the photography is in the same style, but the ads themselves are transformed down-market. “Ad campaigns are a form of brainwashing,” says Garnett. “The shoot is about the power of image making.” Garnett added that it’s not simply an attack on the fashion world, but also an homage. “We’re having fun with branding,” she added. The magazine sells for $7.
WALLPAPER PEELINGS: Nearly three weeks after the resignation of Tyler Brule, editorial director of the Wallpaper Group, publisher Alasdhair Willis and executive editor Tim Clark have resigned. Willis, who served in the post two years, couldn’t be reached at presstime. No successor has been named yet, said a Time Inc. spokesman.
