READY FOR HER CLOSE UP?: After years of dining out together, Graydon Carter and Fran Leibowitz may be about to take their relationship to the next level. According to sources, Carter (who remains mum) is eyeing his old pal as a possible subject for his next film. “He’s thinking of it as a ‘My Dinner with Andre’ sort of thing,” but with Leibowitz instead, said one source. — Jacob Bernstein
ON THE MARK: Confirming a WWD report, The New York Times on Tuesday formally appointed Gerald Marzorati to succeed Adam Moss as the editor of the Times Magazine. Marzorati, 50, has worked at the magazine since 1994, when he joined as articles editor. He is also the author of “A Painter of Darkness,” a book about the painter Leon Golub, and has written frequently for the Times and other publications about popular music, including artists like Björk and Fischerspooner, the artsy electro band he trashed in a particularly witty takedown for Slate Magazine.
While Marzorati’s appointment is perhaps an undramatic end to a race that seemed to feature (albeit briefly) some very high-profile contenders, it is a clear signal that executive editor Bill Keller is giving Moss major decision-making abilities in his new position as assistant managing editor, features. (Moss, as was reported in The New York Observer, had been concerned about taking a similar position under former executive editor Howell Raines because he feared he would become a consultant without “real authority.”)
Marzorati was Moss’ choice all along, even though the company had preliminary conversations with other candidates, among them former Spy and New York editor Kurt Andersen and perhaps Slate editor Jacob Weisberg.
In a press release, the Times said Marzorati would continue to report to Moss, whose job gives him oversight of several sections including the magazine, The New York Times Book Review, and the Culture and Style desks. — J.B.
DAILY DOSE: The competition at the New York shows is heating up already, with 10 days to go. Us Daily is back for a third season, while its rival, IMG’s The Daily, has recruited an ally in New York magazine and Esquire’s Stefano Tonchi.
In exchange for the right to put its logo on them, New York is contributing a pair of features on city hot spots and fashionista haunts, spearheaded by its fashion director Mark Holgate and associate editor Amy Larocca. It raises the question of why New York has sat the Fashion Week sweepstakes out until now. “I think we save our ammunition for a little broader audience,” said New York editor Caroline Miller.
Tonchi’s contributions are a bit more substantial. Esquire’s fashion creative director will moonlight as the guest editor of The Daily’s men’s show edition, slated for the Monday of Fashion Week.
The Daily’s real editor, Brandusa Niro, is already looking ahead to March 2004, when IMG Europe will publish six issues of The Daily in English during the Milan shows. Niro is finalizing an arrangement that would send her entire team to Milan for the week, where they and a few local freelancers will slavishly flatter and lightly mock the same cast of characters they flattered and mocked just two weeks before. There’s also the matter of how IMG expects to make money on the venture, but “even though we’re owned by IMG, we’re a separate division. We’ll have a Fashion Week publication where one doesn’t exist now,” said Niro, adding that Il Daily will have its own publisher and sales people as well. — Greg Lindsay
