NO MORE STYLE FOR CHO: CNN is out of fashion.
The network has canceled Alina Cho’s regular specials, “Fashion: Backstage Pass,” and it’s also passed on renewing the national correspondent’s contract. A spokeswoman for CNN described the parting as mutual.
“Alina Cho is a terrific reporter and host. We thank her for all her work at CNN over the last decade and wish her every success on her next endeavor,” the spokeswoman said.
CNN retains the trademark rights to the specials, but it’s unclear how it might be used in the future. The spokeswoman said the network will continue to cover the fashion industry as news arises.
“I am so thankful for all of the opportunities CNN has given me over the last decade,” Cho said over e-mail. “Along the way, I have found that I am passionate about fashion and hope to announce something very soon that involves style coverage on multiple platforms.”
CNN had extensive fashion coverage through the Eighties and Nineties with “Style With Elsa Klensch,” but canceled that program in 2001. Cho came to the network in 2004 and contributed to a number of programs there. In 2011, she started hosting regular specials on the fashion industry and piggybacked on the broad reach of CNN to become a fixture on the fashion and social circuits.
When designers and influential personalities in the industry wanted a big platform for a piece of news, they went to Cho, who was the only traditional television personality devoting substantial air time to fashion coverage.
Despite the loss of her program, Cho has kept up with her style duties by tweeting pictures from various shows over the last few days. After a dinner for MAC Cosmetics, she tweeted at dinner companions Kelly Osbourne and Kelly Bensimon. “SO FUN, ladies!”
