Melissa Ventosa Martin

Self’s fashion director Melissa Ventosa Martin has left the company, WWD has learned.

The fashion editor, who joined the fitness-centric glossy in 2014 from sister publication Glamour, was one of Joyce Chang’s bigger hires when she took the reins as editor in chief.

At the time of her hire, Chang lauded Ventosa Martin’s “personal style” as the embodiment of Self’s “clean, crisp, modern” style, adding that she brought on the new hire to help make the magazine’s fashion have a “more cohesive point of view.”

Under Chang, Self has amplified its focus on fashion, although in recent months the magazine has folded in more health and fitness-centric coverage. Still, Ventosa Martin’s departure has caused Self’s small fashion department to worry a bit about replacing her, sources said.

A spokeswoman from Self confirmed Ventos Martin’s departure adding, “We’re so proud of the work Melissa has done helping to define Self’s unique sport-inspired fashion point of view. We wish her the best and she will be missed. We look forward to announcing her replacement in the near future.”

Ventosa Martin has another gig lined up, but her next move is still under wraps. She did not respond to inquiries on her new job by press time.
