TIME 100’s FASHION ELITE: Two of fashion’s own have cracked Time magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Along with fellow power elites, Phoebe Philo and Natalie Massenet will be featured in the magazine, which hits newsstands Friday. Time will release the top 100 results on its Web site today, and will honor winners on Tuesday at its annual gala in New York.

The list is comprised of several categories including leaders and revolutionaries, builders and titans, artists and entertainers, scientists and thinkers and heroes and icons. Typically, the chosen 100 are introduced to readers via a short story penned by a fellow leader in his or her industry.
This year, designer Stella McCartney wrote a story on her friendship with Philo, Céline’s creative director. McCartney recounted their first meeting at Central Saint Martins in London 20 years ago, offering that she and Philo became fast, “inseparable” friends.
“One of the few female designers, she celebrates the simple and champions the quality and reality of a woman’s wardrobe,” McCartney wrote. “When people invest in her work, they have it for life. One of the things we share is the reality that the clothes we design are actually worn.”
J. Crew’s president and creative director Jenna Lyons penned the item on Massenet, Net-a-porter’s founder and executive chairman. Lyons, who herself was named to Time’s top 100 last year, gave a less personal, but no less laudatory intro.
“The word visionary is lofty, overused. Somewhat abused. There are few people who can really see something that doesn’t exist. Create it. Explain it. And get others to follow. Natalie Massenet is, in fact, that visionary,” Lyons wrote.
In a snappy turn of phrase, Lyons finished her piece by adding: “The worlds of fashion and commerce have changed dramatically in the past 10 years, in part because of a woman who likens herself to a lazy rock. I’m buying stock in rocks.”
