McCusky, who has relocated to New York from San Francisco, will report to Time Inc. SI Group editorial director Chris Stone and Time Inc. digital director Will Lee when he starts his job on Sept. 6. The move to Sports Illustrated is a homecoming for McClusky, who served as a reporter and editor at there.
McClusky, who will grab the title of digital editor, will oversee the Web sites of Sports Illustrated, Golf, SI Kids and SI Swimsuit, including oversight of their digital news gathering operations, social and video teams. The editor will also work on deeper collaboration and cross-brand initiatives, including on a daily basis with the FanSided Network, SI Play and SI Group partners, Fox Sports and 120 Sports.
“Mark is another game-changer for us. He’s a leading-edge innovator — not just from a journalistic and content development standpoint, but also from a product and operational standpoint,” said Stone. “The depth of his knowledge and appreciation for Sports Illustrated, coupled with his proven track record of innovation and change, uniquely position him to continue SI’s transformation as a leading digital sports voice. We are thrilled.”
A 10-year veteran of Wired, McClusky served as the site’s editor from 2013 to 2015 before moving to the role of head of product and business development. He also served as Wired’s special projects editor, the founding editor of Wired’s Playbook, a sports and technology blog and managing editor of the site, among other roles.
“SI is making incredibly smart, surprising and league-leading moves in the digital space, and makes yet another with Mark’s hire,” said Lee. “He will ignite digital creativity and enterprising thinking not just for our brand, but for the company.”
For his part, McClusky offered: “There’s never been a better time to be a sports fan, and there’s never been more of a need for the high-impact stories that Sports Illustrated tells better than anyone else. With innovation and smart investment the SI Group is well-positioned to deliver these stories across the booming digital universe. I can’t wait to help the team push the boundaries of content creation to build on its momentum and deliver new experiences to sports fans everywhere.”
