W magazine's "The Shot" is a competition for aspiring fashion photographers to shoot for the magazine.

When Stefano Tonchi participated in a live Tumblr Q&A with W magazine readers last year, many of the more than 1,000 questions to the editor in chief were about what he’s looking for in photographers. So this year, the magazine is hosting a competition that will let an aspiring fashion photographer shoot for the magazine.

“The Shot” is a two-month competition, starting today, that calls for photographers who have not worked for a major U.S. fashion magazine to submit three images to be judged by Tonchi, Boss women’s wear artistic director Jason Wu (Hugo Boss is partnering on the competition) and W senior photo editor Esme Rene. The winner will have the chance to photograph a feature for the magazine’s September issue, and will ultimately be decided by the industry judges in addition to public voting at wmagazine.com.

This isn’t the first time that the photo-heavy magazine has hosted a photo competition. The Shot competition was introduced in October 2012, and winner Boo George was featured in the September 2013 issue.

Last year, the magazine hosted a modeling competition whose winner was signed by IMG Models, and in addition to scouting new talent on social media, regularly produces fashion shoots specifically for the title’s Instagram account.

Tonchi said that, “with The Shot, we want to support the next generation of image-makers.”

The winner will also be considered to shoot for Hugo Boss, which will host an event with W during New York Fashion Week in September. Submissions will be open through April 30 and will be visible at wmagazine.com/the-shot. The winner will be revealed in May.

“There is so much emerging talent in this field,” Wu said. “I am very much looking forward to the first submissions.”
