TSG Consumer Partners has acquired online outdoor gear and apparel e-tailer Backcountry.com for an undisclosed amount.

TSG acquired the specialty retailer from Liberty Interactive Corp. The e-tailer’s founder Jim Holland will continue to own a stake in the company. Jill Layfield, president and chief executive officer, will continue with the company. “We are thankful for the support that Liberty has given us during their ownership to allow us to grow and expand Backcountry….By combining TSG’s expertise with Backcountry’s leadership position in the outdoor market, the company will be well-positioned to build on our current platform and drive significant growth,” Layfield said.

Backcountry was founded in 1996. Based in Park City, Utah, the company’s customer base is through its portfolio of Web sites including Backcountry, Competitive Cyclist, MotoSport, Bergfreunde, Steep and Cheap and Whiskey Militia.

TSG, a private equity firm, has about $3 billion in equity capital under management. It is focused on the branded consumer space. Among its investments are: Revolve Clothing; Smashbox Cosmetics; Pureology; E.l.f. cosmetics and Paige Denim.
