Taubman Centers Inc. took a big step forward in its Asia expansion strategy by opening the CityOn.Xi’an shopping center Saturday in northwest China’s Xi’an city, Shaanxi province.

The center, jointly developed by Taubman Asia and Wangfujing Group Co. Ltd., is the first of three Taubman projects to launch in Asia this year.

As of the opening, CityOn.Xi’an is 95 percent leased and approximately 80 percent occupied. The center is anchored by Wangfujing Department Store and has a range of retail from fast fashion to accessible luxury, including domestic and international designers and brands. It’s expected to attract locals and tourists.

The ribbon-cutting was attended by Robert Taubman, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Taubman Centers, and Bing Liu, former chairwoman of Wangfujing Group, among others.

“It is a proud moment in Taubman history as CityOn.Xi’an’s opening represents the first of our three Asia shopping centers [opening] this year,” Taubman said. “The center is a terrific asset and we are proud of what we have accomplished with our joint venture partner Wangfujing.”

Liu said, “CityOn.Xi’an combines Wangfujing’s extensive experience as China’s leading retail brand and Taubman’s more than half century legacy in shopping center development.”

Coach, Gap, H&M, Forever 21, Monki, Zara, Zara Home, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Oysho, Stradivarius, La Chapelle US, La Babite, Candie’s, Marc Ecko, La Chapelle, La Chapelle Kids, J.Lindeberg, Toys “R” Us, Balabala, Gymboree and Muji are among the retailers.

In addition, Starbucks, Pacific Coffee, Holiland, Skyland Food Court, Cousin Café, Ma La Kuai Le Ying, Ma Wei Yin Xiang, Musang King and Pang Ge Lia are at the center.

Entertainment venues include the Oscar International Cinema, Nobleman Training Club and Cartoony World.

CityOn.Xi’an, located in the heart of the Weiyang district, has nearly one million square feet over seven shopping levels. The center has 2,200 parking spaces, links to metro lines and easy access to the Airport Expressway and the High Speed Railway Station.

Xi’an is considered an important cultural destinations in China with more than 8.5 million residents and 100 million-plus visitors per year, according to the 2015 National Economic and Social Development Statistical Bulletin of Xi’an, which was published in March.

The Taubman Asia subsidiary of Taubman Centers is also opening Starfield Hanam in Hanam, South Korea, in September, and the CityOn.Zhenzghou center in Zhengzhou, China, in the fourth quarter of this year.

Wangfujing Group Co. is a 60-year-old Beijing-based retailer operating 46 properties in 28 cities, including department stores, shopping malls and outlet formats. The group offers an operating area of approximately two million square meters, or 6.56 million square feet.
