Backcountry.com LLC announced that Jonathan Nielsen will be its chief executive officer.

Backcountry is one of the largest online specialty retailers of outdoor gear and apparel. Nielsen has been serving as the interim ceo since December when Jill Layfield stepped down.

Nielsen joined Backcountry in 2010 to lead the corporate development and strategy teams. He led the acquisition of Competitive Cyclist and served as executive vice president of product management and design. He managed product strategy and the user experience across the entire Backcountry portfolio. Before joining Backcountry, Nielsen was a member of eBay’s development team, where he focused on mergers and acquisitions.

“Jonathan is a proven leader with an exceptional track record of growing retail brands and delivering strong operating performance,” said Jennifer Baxter Moser, board member and managing director at TSG Consumer Partners. “We believe he is ideally positioned to lead Backcountry as it continues to execute on its growth strategy across its multiple brand, categories and geographies.”

The company was founded in 1996 and is based in Park City, Utah. It includes CompetitiveCyclist.com, MotoSport.com, Bergfreunde.de and SteepandCheap.com. The company was acquired by TSG Consumer Partners in 2015.

“With Backcountry’s incredibly loyal customer base, exceptional e-commerce platform, high-quality product offering, and robust partner relationships, we are well-positioned to continue to drive growth and broaden our reach within the outdoor retail market,” said Nielsen.
