Bloomingdale’s is back in expansion mode, but with smaller stores.

The upscale department store chain said Thursday that it will open a full-line, two-level store in the Glendale Galleria in Glendale, Calif., in fall 2013.  At 120,000 square feet, the store is about half the size of typical Bloomingdale’s locations. In Glendale, Bloomingdale’s will move into a former Mervyn’s. The mall will be redeveloped by its owner, General Growth Properties Inc., and Bloomingdale’s will remodel its site.


Bloomingdale’s current store expansion strategy focuses on opening regular-priced smaller stores as well as outlets.

“Much like Bloomingdale’s stores in SoHo and Santa Monica, we expect our assortment and shopping experience in Glendale will be carefully edited for the community and customer,” said Michael Gould, chairman and chief executive officer. “Bloomingdale’s business in Southern California has developed rapidly since we opened our first store in the Los Angeles area in 1996. Glendale Galleria will be our eighth store in the market.” The company will hire 175 associates to work at the store.

The last full-price store opened by Bloomingdale’s was in Santa Monica a year ago. It’s also a small unit, with 76,000 square feet for selling, and at the time it opened it was considered a test of how well the company could adapt its scaled-down SoHo concept to locations outside New York. Glendale’s interior design and decor will reflect the local community, similar to the approach taken in Santa Monica.
