The relationship with Burberry and Barneys New York is getting cozier.
The brand has created a capsule collection — Burberry XO Barneys New York — exclusively for the retailer for spring that is “inspired by the relaxed spirit” of its Prorsum collection.
The capsule features around 40 pieces with a formal bent and ranges from tuxedos to accessories. There are also reimagined classic outerwear styles including a trench coach, field jacket and biker jacket. Prints are inspired by vintage English book covers, which were painted and drawn by hand at Burberry’s studio in London. Accessories include a satchel and a field sneaker in a satin/leather/suede/velvet combination.
“This is coming from the top,” said Tom Kalenderian, executive vice president of men’s wear for Barneys. “Christopher Bailey [Burberry’s chief creative and chief executive officer] put together a collection tailored to our clients. We’ve always had a very special relationship with Burberry and have carried Prorsum since its inception. So this became a passion project.”
Kalenderian said the collection will hit stores in New York and Beverly Hills as well as online on Monday, Feb. 9. The store will also unveil a digital look book as well as an Instagram initiative on that date as well as a story on its microsite, The Window, featuring an interview with British musician George Barnett wearing a look from the collection.
“They’ve been tremendously supportive and the clothes are beautiful,” Kalenderian said. “It’s tailored with a formal stance.” He pointed to the strength of the coats, which include Chesterfields and cabans, as well as the jewel-toned tuxedos.
“There are classic components you’d come to expect from Burberry, but this is a more polished caspule and the tailoring is very dressy and sharp. It’s perfect for the red carpet but can also be broken up and worn with other things. The silhouettes are trim but not supertight.”
Bailey said Burberry “wanted the collection to have an easy and relaxed spirit, celebrating our iconic outerwear in lightweight and modern silhouettes. Just as we did for the looks in our runway collection, we have played with layering to create contrast and an overall aesthetic that can be worn in the day or in the evening.”
The pricing is comparable to Burberry Prorsum, where outerwear begins at $1,150. While the collection as a whole references the Prorsum collection, there are classic Burberry London tailoring styles as well, with prices beginning at $1,795.
Kalenderian said because of the “limited edition” status of the collection, he expects the pieces to be viewed as “investment pieces” by the Barneys customer. “We’re fortunate to have a customer who appreciates beautiful things.”
A second Burberry XO Barneys New York collection will be offered for fall, Kalenderian said.
