BLOW TO VENTURE: Greg Blow has been named director of fashion merchandising and product development at Venture Stores, the St. Louis-based discount chain.

Blow resigned as fashion director of Sears, Roebuck & Co.’s Merchandise Group last November, in the wake of a fashion office reorganization.

At Venture, he will be responsible for product development and fashion direction for women’s, children’s and men’s apparel, reporting to Liz Levin, senior vice president of women’s apparel, accessories and intimate apparel, and George Needleman, senior vice president for children’s and men’s.

Blow succeeds Elaine Burkhardt who left the company.

QUAKE SALE: Mac Frugal’s Bargains – Close-outs, Inc., Dominguez, Calif., will host an “Earthquake Clearance Event” at three of its Pic ‘N’ Save stores to help victims of the Northridge earthquake.

The stores will set up tents in their parking lots with merchandise tagged at an additional 25 percent off already discounted prices. The tent sales will be at 10360 Mason Ave. in Chatsworth, 2225 Tapo St. in Simi Valley and 21910 Sherman Way in Canoga Park.

The event starts Friday at 9 a.m. and continues until the tents are empty. The retailer is accepting American Red Cross vouchers at all its lcoations.

Pic ‘N’ Save sells apparel and general merchandise at 40 to 70 percent off regular retail prices.

EARNINGS UP, COMPS OFF: One Price Clothing Stores, Duncan, S.C., said earnings rose 49 percent in the fourth quarter and 27 percent in the year ended Jan. 1.

In the quarter, the company earned $4.5 million, or 64 cents a share, against $3 million, or 43 cents. Sales jumped 22 percent, to $72.7 million from $59.8 million, but comparable-store sales were flat.

In the year, earnings were $8.7 million, or $1.27, against $6.8 million, or $1. Sales advanced 27 percent, to $234.7 million from $184.1 million, but comparable-store sales slipped 3 percent.

As of Jan. 1, the company operated 540 stores in 26 states. It plans to open about 125 stores this year and close 30 for a net gain of 95 stores.

NEW BEATS AT BRADLEES: Bradlees, Braintree, Mass., has implemented some changes in merchandising and marketing.

Cecilia Clancy and Christine Bailey each have been named vice presidents and general merchandise managers.

Clancy who joined Bradlees in 1982 as an assistant buyer and most recently was divisional merchandise manager of misses’ sportswear, will now oversee women’s sportswear, ready-to-wear, juniors, intimate apparel, accessories and jewelry.

Bailey, who also joined the company in 1982 as an assistant buyer and has been divisional merchandise manager of children’s wear, now heads children’s, men’s and boys’.

In addition, Barry Horwitz, formerly vice president of strategic planning with Shopko Stores, has been named vice president of marketing , and Charles Stapansky, who was vice president of marketing and sales promotion for Grossman’s, joins Bradlee’s as vice president of adveritsing.

Bradlees operates 126 discount stores in the Northeast.
