Combatant Gentlemen's first stand-alone store in Santa Monica.

DASHING DUDES: Men’s suiting company Combatant Gentlemen today opened its first store outside of its Orange County headquarters.

The company’s location, at Macerich’s Santa Monica Place outdoor center, is a fitting one for the tech colony that has come to define the city with a mix of e-commerce and digital companies calling it their home, including YouTube makeup star and entrepreneur Michelle Phan’s Ipsy Open Studios, online men’s suit and tux rental company The Black Tux, re-commerce firm Tradesy, bridesmaid dress rental company Vow to Be Chic and online content maker Demand Media.

The 2,200-square-foot store, which had been slated for Beverly Hills, potentially on Robertson Boulevard, is located near Nordstrom and carries the company’s suits, shirts, bottoms and accessories.

The store follows last year’s opening of Combatant Gentlemen’s first permanent retail space, called The Haberdashery and located at its headquarters in Irvine, Calif.. It also participated in Nordstrom’s pop-in experiences earlier this year in its first brick-and-mortar play with a major retailer. It also continues to roll out new product to the market, with shoes the most recent launch this year.

The four-year-old company’s seen rapid growth since its launch by tailor and cofounder Vishaal Melwani, who also serves as its chief executive officer. It began turning a profit in 2014. Technology’s been on its side from the start and played a significant advantage in the born-online business’s trajectory. Its proprietary, cloud-based e-commerce management software Tower essentially allows buying activity information happening on the web site to be funneled back to the factories so that product is manufactured smartly based on demand. The company expects to eventually license the technology out to other businesses.
