Express will amp up its offering for holiday with a higher-priced, edgy capsule collection called Edition, WWD has learned.

Edition represents “an evolution of Express’ philosophy for mixing runway fashion with street style,” David Kornberg, president and chief executive officer of Express, told WWD. “We tapped into our talented design team to develop a high-end capsule collection that is very style-driven and aspirational.”

Kornberg added that Edition has “a more refined aesthetic that personifies the Express girl who is sexy, confident, cool and irresistibly individual.”

Nicholas Wheatley, vice president of women’s design, said Edition incorporates more luxury fabrics than Express typically utilizes, but that Edition maintains the character of the brand. “It’s still sexy and tomboy,”  Wheatley said.

The 15-piece Edition collection, priced in the $80 to $500 range, will be sold in 27 Express stores and online beginning Dec. 1. Among the items — updated tuxedo suits, moto jackets, cocktail dress, party dresses and leather shorts. The color palette is neutral, with a lot of black, ivory, gold and crimson. Fabrics are a mix of silk, leather, chiffon, feathers and guipure lace.

Express fare is typically priced well under $100, with the Web site indicating cocktail dresses from around $60 to $90, blouses in the $30 to $50 range, and leggings from $50 to $80.

Edition marks the first time Express is launching a higher-priced holiday collection. “This is not an experiment. We wanted to showcase our talented design team,” said a spokeswoman.

Often, retailers’ holiday assortments emphasize gift-type items, like candles, picture frames, sweaters and slippers, at prices generally less than the regular assortments.
