NEW YORK — Michael Geraghty was named chairman on Monday of the Filene’s/Kaufmann’s department store division of May Department Stores.

Geraghty, 55, executive vice president of finance and merchandise information systems at Filene’s/Kaufmann’s, succeeds William Gingerich, who will retire on Oct. 31. Geraghty joined May in 1980 as vice president of credit and customer service at May’s former May Co. California division. He has held several posts within May, and was named to his current job this year.

Gingerich, 55, joined May in 1984 as controller of the former Strouss division before joining Kaufmann’s in 1986 as controller. After holding several positions within Kaufmann’s, he became chairman in 1999 and chairman of Filene’s/Kaufmann’s in 2002.

Gingerich’s “contributions and accomplishments on behalf of May have been substantial,’’ John Dunham, president of May, said in a statement. “His leadership and business insights will be missed by his associates and peers throughout the company.’’

Geraghty “has a proven record of success as a manager and leader,’’ William P. McNamara, May’s vice chairman, said in a statement. He added that “His extensive experience at Filene’s/Kaufmann’s will help provide a smooth management transition for this very important position.’’
