Saucony has signed its first sprinter.

The Massachusetts-based footwear and apparel performance brand has inked a multi-year endorsement contract with Wallace Spearmon, Jr., 2008 U.S. Olympian and two-time World Championships gold medalist.

A specialist at the 200-meter distance, Spearmon’s signing represents a “sea change” for Saucony. “We’ve been more geared to middle and distance runners,” said Richie Woodworth, president of Saucony. “But Wallace allows us a bridge to build our relationship across a broader spectrum of runners.”

It also gives Saucony an endorser for its new line of AMP Pro2 training and recovery compression apparel that is slated to ship its first products in July. Woodworth also revealed that although details are still being worked out, Saucony is planning to create a co-branded apparel collection with Spearmon for 2011. “It will be a nice, small group of running apparel and run culture sportswear,” he said.
