PARIS – Fast-fashion started the year off at a modest pace as same-store sales at Hennes & Mauritz AB rose 1 percent in January versus the same month a year ago.

Including new stores, group sales increased by nine percent in local currencies and including value-added tax, compared to an 8 percent rise in December.

The Swedish retail behemoth operated 2,210 stores as of Jan. 31, versus 1,987 locations one year earlier.

H&M’s same-store sales improved 5 percent for its 2009/2010 financial year, which runs from Dec. 1 to Nov. 30.
